Hutter Putter Variable Speed Rotor Turning Drives are the safest and fastest way of turning your turbine rotors during an outage. They operate using a portable remote control pendent that goes right to any coupling you're working on. This design feature alone is one of many safety features that make the Hutter Putter a “must have” tool for contractors and power plants worldwide.
Hutter Putters shorten outages because they are used during critical path activities of the outage, such as coupling reassembly and coupling alignment. They also eliminate the source of many OSHA recordable accidents, namely the use of the overhead cranes for rotor turning. The Hutter Putter is also much safer, more reliable, and less manpower intensive than traditional methods of turning rotors such as air motors and pipe threaders that hang on top of the existing turning gear motor. Many first buyers of Hutter Putters were plants that had a severe worker accident involving an air motor or pipe threader.
Get “up to speed” and buy a Hutter Putter for your next outage. Why take a chance on somebody getting hurt? Why not save hours off your critical path? There are 3 standard models to choose from that fit General Electric, Westinghouse, Allis Chalmers, and all other makes of turbines from 20 MW up to 1400 MW. Custom models are also available, such as a permanent Hutter Putter emergency drive for unexpected turning gear motor failures.

Hutter Putter™ RTD-12
Model Number RTD-12 is our most popular model. It rotates turbines with pedestal mounted turning gears. It varies existing turning gear speed from 1/2 down to 1/12 of normal speed. It includes "soft start” technology so it won't jar the gear teeth and includes integral motor overload protection. Can be used on Westinghouse units with spacer type bull gears (extra bolting is sold separately).
Details: RTD-12 Hutter Putter electrically connects to existing turning gear motors. It plugs into any nearby 460 power source. Includes a safety switch for easy lockout. No mechanical alterations are required. It operates by a portable controller that goes anywhere along the turbine centerline. No expertise is required to operate. Speed can be varied “on the fly”, making it ideal for critical path outage tasks such as coupling alignment checks, coupling reassembly, in-place rotor inspections, and balance weight installation.
Cost Saving Benefits of using a Hutter Putter:
-
Slashes coupling alignment and assembly time
-
Improves worker safety by eliminating the overhead crane from rotor turning
-
Improves worker safety because it can be controlled right at the coupling being worked on
-
Improves worker safety by eliminating dangerous air motors, pipe threader rigs and jog buttons
-
Provides backup to turning gear MCC (Palo Verde saved $5 million in downtime during a startup)
-
Usable on different makes, models, and sizes of turbines with “built in” turning gears

Provides additional speed reduction for turbines 500 MW and larger with vertical turning gear motors.
Hutter Putter Gearbox replaces
existing turning gear motor.
Eliminates need for bearing lift oil!
Eliminates crane pin turning and dangerous air motors!

Hutter Putter™ RTD-168
Model Number RTD-168 is our second most popular model. It rotates very large turbines with pedestal mounted turning gears. It provides ultra slow speed turning capability and turns without need for bearing lift oil (hand oil instead). Requires removal of existing turning gear motor. Replaces it with Hutter Putter gearbox shown above. Gearmotor installs in minutes and can be done before or right after outage starts.
RTD-168 varies existing turning gear speed from 1/2 down to 1/168th of normal speed. It includes "soft start” technology so it won't jar the gear teeth and includes motor overload protection. The RTD-168 package includes gearbox, motor, mounting plate, electrical panel, speed control box, speed control pendent, and safety switch.
Details: RTD-168 Hutter Putter is similar to RTD-12 except it includes its own custom made gearbox that replaces the existing turning gear motor. It is built specifically for existing turning gears with vertical motors. It plugs into any nearby 460 power source. Includes a safety switch for easy lockout. It operates by a portable controller that goes anywhere along the turbine centerline. No expertise is required to operate. Speed can be varied “on the fly", making it ideal for critical path outage tasks such as coupling alignment checks, coupling reassembly, in-place rotor inspections, and balance weight installation.
Cost Saving Benefits of using a Hutter Putter:
- Slashes coupling alignment and assembly time
- Improves worker safety by eliminating the overhead crane from rotor turning
- Improves worker safety because it can be controlled right at the coupling being worked on
- Improves worker safety by eliminating dangerous air motor and pony motor rigs
- Provides backup to turning gear MCC (Palo Verde saved millions in downtime during a startup)
Useable on different makes, models, and sizes of turbines with “built in” turning gears.

Hutter Putter™ RTD-C2
Model Number RTD-C2 is fast becoming our second most popular model. It rotates older turbines with turning gears that are removed with the coupling cover. The RTD-C2 package includes gearbox, motor, mounting plate, clash gear, electrical panel, speed control box, speed control pendent, and safety switch. Unit bolts directly to existing horizontal joint holes next to the bull gear and installs in minutes. It is extremely safe to use and eliminates danger of turning the rotors with the overhead crane. Varies turning speed from about 1 RPM down to 1/12 RPM. It includes "soft start” technology so it won't jar the gear teeth and includes motor overload protection. It can be used on Westinghouse units with spacer type bull gears (extra bolting is sold separately).
Details: Model RTD-C2 Hutter Putter is a safer way to turn older turbines. It eliminates the danger of using the overhead crane and pin or steel rolling bars. It turns your entire rotor train at a safe slow speed with the precision of a Swiss Watch. The gearbox portion mounts right onto the horizontal joint once the coupling cover is removed. Starting, stopping, and speed adjustment are done using its remote control pendent, making it incredibly safe and easy to operate. Can be used on Westinghouse units with detachable bull gears (extra bolting is sold separately). Plugs into any nearby 460 power source. Includes a safety switch for easy lockout. Speed can be varied “on the fly”, making it ideal for critical path outage tasks such as coupling alignment checks, coupling reassembly, in-place rotor inspections, and balance weight installation.
Cost Saving Benefits of using a Hutter Putter:
- Slashes coupling alignment and assembly time
- Improves worker safety by eliminating the overhead crane from rotor turning
- Improves worker safety because it can be controlled right at the coupling being worked on
- Improves worker safety by eliminating dangerous air motor and pony motor rigs
Useable on different makes, models, and sizes of turbines with coupling cover mounted turning gears. |
